La journaliste Agnès Uwimana, directrice du journal indépendant Umurabyo, arrêtée pour négationnisme et outrage à Kagamé
La police rwandaise a arrêté jeudi 8 juillet la directrice du journal privé Umurabyo, Agnès Uwimana, accusée notamment d'”outrage au chef de l’Etat” et “négation du génocide des Tutsi” de 1994.
Agnès Uwimana est poursuivie pour “incitation à la désobéissance civile, outrage au chef de l’Etat, propagation de rumeurs visant à troubler l’ordre et la tranquillité publiques et négation du génocide des Tutsi” de 1994, à travers des articles publiés ces derniers jours dans son journal, a indiqué le porte-parole de la police, Eric Kayiranga. M. Kayiranga a ajouté que Mme Uwimana, arrêtée jeudi, était encore entre les mains de la police en attendant que son dossier soit transmis au parquet.
Le Haut conseil des médias (HCM), organe étatique de régulation de la presse, avait adressé plusieurs mises en garde à Mme Uwimana au cours des dernières semaines. La journaliste avait été déjà condamnée à un an de prison ferme par un tribunal rwandais notamment pour “sectarisme” et “diffamation”. Elle avait repris la publication de son journal après avoir purgé la totalité de la peine début 2008.

Journalist Ms. Agnes Uwimana, director of the Umurabyo newspaper, has been arrested for genocide denial and for insulting Kagame.
The Rwandan police arrested Thursday, July 8 the director of the private newspaper Umurabyo, Uwimana, particularly she’s accused of “insulting the Head of State” and “denial of the Tutsi genocide” of 1994.
Uwimana is accused of “incitement to civil disobedience, insulting the head of the state, spreading up rumors to disturb the public peace and order and denial of the Tutsi genocide” of 1994, through articles published in recent days in her diary, said the spokesman of the police, Eric Kayiranga. Mr. Kayiranga said Ms. Uwimana has been arrested Thursday and up to now she’s still in the hands of police waiting to have her case sent to prosecutors.
The Higher Media Council (HCM), an organ of state regulation of the press, had sent several warnings to Ms. Uwimana in recent weeks. The journalist had already been sentenced to one year in prison by a Rwandan court for such “sectarianism” and “libel”. She had resumed the publication of her newspaper after serving full sentence in early 2008.
